The Passion according to Baena
A genuine way to live Holy Week

The thunder of drums and infinite colors define Holy Week in Baena
The uniqueness of its penitential parades make it a unique celebration.
Recognized worldwide, its essence consists of a peculiar way of expressing the Faith of a people. The drumbeat in Baena is a constant in the main week par excellence and the main feature that makes it one of the most renowned festivals in Spain.
The sound of the drum of the mobs of Jews, the coliblancos and the colinegros, marks the future of Lent and Holy Week in Baena, which takes place between the rectitude of the parades and their particular “steps” or stagings. These are evangelical representations reminiscent of the autos sacramentales that, from the Baroque period to the present day, have remained unchanged under the protection of tradition. Each one of the brotherhoods of Baen must be understood as a compendium of different brotherhoods and gangs that come together in the same parade to demonstrate their devotion to the sacred images to which they worship.
This festivity would not be the same without the figure of the Jew, the color of his clothing and the sound of his drum which, following the dictates of tradition, has been made for centuries in the craftsmen’s workshops. Visiting the temples and learning about the intense work of their brotherhoods and crews is the best way to soak up the essence of a celebration that in Baena has its own character and vocabulary.
